meatwave lost gardens installationBrisvegan Ross Manning probably misses their mild-mannered winter now that he’s based in Melbourne, but the cold fingers haven’t stopped him from continually tweaking new sound-machines into existence, most recently at the Lost Gardens exhibit where his drill powered turntable sculpture was a highlight of the show. He has also self-released his first 4 Layers of 9 album – Trundle Clack, and is both performing and demonstrating instrument building workshops at the upcoming Liquid Architecture festivals around the country in July.

>>What attracts you to repurposing old technologies for making music with?
What I like about the older vibrating instruments and analog electronics is their tangibility as objects. As in

chrismEven in the world’s most isolated city, the humble, decades old, Commodore 64 is still being put to good use. Chris McCormick ( one half of ChrisM & Fenris, and Sciencegirl records ) is one the culprits responsible in Perth, combining ye olde game synths with his own custom programmed software, all manner of loops and samples, and a dash of turntablism to make his swimmingly fresh improvisations. Eastsiders can catch Chris at Plug N Play on Thu Jun 29 from 8-11pm ( 201 Smith st, Fitzroy, Melb ). +Bonus=Stax-o-trax.

>>What attracts about combining old hardware and new software?
There are a variety of motivations for that. There’s the nostalgia aspect – everyone remembers and loves computers and hardware of times gone by, and often the software tools that we have now can be kind of retrofitted to work with that old hardware and do things that would have been harder to do back then. For example, I can now develop Commodore 64 software on my desktop PC using nice editors and compilers and emulators, and only transfer it to the hardware for testing and use at the end. In the old days you had to develop on the very machine you were deploying on, which would have been annoying to say the least. There’s also an economic aspect to it – artists tend not to be the richest of folk. So it’s pretty cool to be able to take an old piece of crap and make it do something more wicked than an expensive laptop running VSTs or Ableton Live or whatever kids are using these days.

rosto animationMelbourne International Film Festival 2006 ( June 20-25 @ ACMI) struts into town with it another swagger of global animations, including Rosto’s from the Netherlands. Adapted from his graphic novel, which was in turn inspired by the music of his band, these digital shorts shine with a surreal deviance, and Rosto’s artist talk should be lively too: Sunday June 26, 6pm @ ACMI.
Bite his trailers, comics, music & more.

>Most musicians are happy soundtracking a film – what was it about your music that made you make a graphic novel and then an animation to accompany it?
This happened in a period in my life where I learned there was no real boundaries between

World War II got in the way in 1942 & 1946, but once every other four years since 1930, the world has turned it’s attentions to groups of men in coloured uniforms racing around a field after a round leather ball. Eet is happa-nin-n-ng ah-gain, June 9-July 9. Enjoy it while you can, as scientists hope to have team of robots that can win the World Cup by 2050.

Robo Cup 2006

“RoboCup is an international joint project to promote AI, robotics, and related field. It is an attempt to foster AI and intelligent robotics research by providing a standard problem where wide range of technologies can be integrated and examined.”

And yes, by the year 2050, they hope to have a team of ‘fully autonomous humanoid robots that can win against the human world soccer champion team’.
