Week 12: More Mapping + Animating

iPad / iPhone Mapping Apps:

PRSPCTV : “A simple tool for projection mapping. You can map image texture or movie texture to quad surface in real scene.” (+ website) ($3.99)

The Light Art iPAD app: “enables anyone with an iPad and a projector to create their own colorful projection mapped installations. Based on the Sku Lights concept developed by Erick Calderon, Light Art uses basic mapping principles that allow the user to project on a variety of individual surfaces. The visual effect is achieved by projecting exclusively on the desired surface, with the remaining portions of the installation remaining dark.”

((Note – only projects colours, not video content, onto mapped areas. $9.99) (See also: Tagtool )

Ipad / iPhone friendly video export settings:

  • H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
  • MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
  • Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

Android News? Touch OSC is now available on Android (as well as as iOS) – an app that allows control of computer apps via midi + OSC.

Other Free Mapping Software:

A beta version of VPT 7.0 has just been released:

Using Masks Within After Effects:

After we have created a template image for our projections (so that projecting that image will cover the various parts of our site), the next step is creating video for isolating part of that image and animating it or sequencing images/video that display only in that portion.

Previously, we’ve looked at using the black and white template images in After Effects, and using the multiply blend mode to isolate video / images on layers underneath the template image (anywhere that is white in the template image, will show the video underneath).

Another useful method for isolating portions of an image is masking…

Using 3D Compositing Within After Effects:

A nice introduction to using the 3D camera in After Effects… learn how to:

  • Bring PSDs into your AE project
  • Resize images and graphics
  • Use the After Effects 3D camera to move in X, Y and Z space
  • Keyframe camera movement
  • Smooth camera moves by modifying keyframe interpolation and “Rove Across Time”
  • Change After Effects camera views
  • Define focus distance (set foreground or background to be out of focus) and modify aperture

Videos:

We’ve seen Kyle McDonald’s work before – with FaceOSC and Mapamok. Here he is mapping and animating projector light from individual mirrorball mirrors:

Next Week:

SWOTVAC – June 4th, 9.30-12.30 – we will have FOUR PROJECTORS in the AV LAB on Level 7, for testing and feedback. Please bring video content for mapping, and any materials you might wish to test projections against.
