Last Week’s Research Task:
- What are some standard frame sizes?
- What are some standard frame rates?
- What’s the difference between frame based video or field based ( interlaced ) video?
- What is the difference between Picture aspect ratio and Pixel aspect ratio?
- What is a codec, and what are their strengths and weaknesses? ( eg H264 / photopjpeg / Apple ProRes / animation )
- Codec related : Which codecs include alpha channels?
- Codec related : What is a movie wrapper? What is a container format?
- What is bitrate? (And what is an optimum bitrate for a video file to be played on the web or in a gallery? )
- What is the difference between PAL + NTSC?
From the above, devise a list of what the optimum technical settings should be for your video project.
(We will use these settings as the submission criteria.)

Week 1: An Overview
After Effects
Rather than let visual effects drive your video – ask – what visual effects does this video need, then try and figure out a way to achieve that effect or look.
If video is a series of frames – how might these frames be treated? (Don’t limit the the use of After Effects to just animating digital images.. experiment with re-contextualised frames or footage to mix digital / analogue effects. What processes might help evoke your ‘perceptions in motion’? ) Some example treatments:
– frames printed out and shredded, repositioned : https://vimeo.com/4211147
– frames printed out and made into origami models : Fast Film by Virgil Widrich (making of) (full clip)
Familiarise yourself with the After Effects interface + workflow: Lynda.com.
For our compositing, colour grading and effects needs – we will mostly focus on these elements of the following Video Co-Pilot tutorials:
- 01. Introduction
- 02. Effects
- 03. Animation
- 04. Keying & Transparency
- 08. Titles: 1 & 2
- 10. Rendering
