Week 5

Editing the Moving Image

Walter Murch ( Godfather, Apocalypse Now etc ) – outlines 6 principles for editing. (His book on the topic, In the Blink of An Eye, is an inspirational read. )
Editing: Alfred Hitchcock explains the Kuleshov Effect.
Filmsound.org hosts a great range of writing about how sound can work with video.

Compositing for multiple screens and surfaces?

Split Screen is a weblog dedicated to the art of the split screen and multi-layered visuals, as seen in movies, music videos, commercials and other media based on moving images.

Technical Exercise:

Part 1 : Creating A Time Lapse Video

Links for creating a time lapse with iMovie, Final Cut Pro, Premiere, Vegas.

How to create a time lapse video from photographs, using Quicktime Pro.
(Note – In OS X, QT Pro comes in two flavours – QT Pro X – which is used by default, and the more powerful QT Pro 7 – which can be found in your utilities folder within the applications folder.)
Basic guide for importing an image sequence in Quicktime Pro and exporting it as a video file. (video tutorial/demo)
How to make a time lapse with Final Cut Pro X.
Considerations for making a high quality time lapse with a DSLR camera (exposure settings etc).

Part 2: Understanding The Parameters for Exporting A Video

Understanding a video file…. what is video?

Bonus Round Tutorial:

How to trace an outline of an object with video.

This example shows a building outlined with madmapper…but the process can be adapted to suit IR Mapio..

Other Software:

Installed in the Lab:

VPT :  A free (Mac + PC ) multipurpose realtime projection software tool created by HC Gilje.

Not Installed in the Lab:

Madmapper ( Mac only) MadMapper is built around the idea of sharing video content between applications, using a Mac OS X based framework called Syphon. ( List of tutorials for connecting various software to Madmapper. )

Millumin – Mac software for ‘creating and performing audiovisual shows’. Includes 4 corner mapping for layers,  mesh warping for screens and multi-display edge blending.

Meshwarp Server – (mac/PC + free) ‘A versatile Mapping Tool to create complex Video Projection Installations.’ ( Site includes detailed tutorials – using your 3D meshes etc )

VVVV – “Hybrid graphical/textual programming environment for easy prototyping and development. It is designed to facilitate the handling of large media environments with physical interfaces, real-time motion graphics, audio and video that can interact with many users simultaneously.” ( Tutorial about scanning 3D objects, for precisely projection mapping 3D objects… Tutorial about projecting onto 3D Geometry )

LPMT ( 39 Euros for PC mapping software )

VJ Forums / Wikipedia’s VJ software list.

ORI-REVO:  – A Design Tool for 3D Origami of Revolution.
ORIPA – An Origami Pattern Editor.
Treemaker –  a program for the design of origami bases
Pepakura Designer – make templates for paperwork models from 3D data files.

Lynda.com’s very good (and expensive) video tutorials… are available for free to students through the RMIT library website. Highly recommended and very relevant to this course – see their collections of tutorials for 3D + animation, editing, photoshop, etc and perhaps of special interest?  Learning After Effects CS6 ( animation / visual effects / compositing ) chapters 1-4.
