Books Read, Movies Watched
A place where a boy might gather thoughts on the media fluttering past.
Currently Chewing:
You Are Here; Personal Geographies & Other Maps of The Imagination by Katharine Harmon.
Behind The Seen : How Walter Murch edited Cold Mountain using Apple’s Final Cut Pro and what this means for cinema, by Charles Koppelman.
Just Finished:
My First Movie, edited by Stephen Lowenstein : inspiring collection of interviews, 20 directors revealing about their first film..
Kafka On The Shore – another swooningly enchanting book by Haruki Murakami. The nimble minded invention is still there, but less clutter and more focus on the undercurrents than some of his previous books.
David Boring – by Daniel Clowes – Graphic novel with a grand storytelling flavour…
Epileptic by David B – A stupendous graphic novel, a real achievement. Utterly addictive and moving.
Just Watched:
The Holy Mountain ( again ) by Alejandro Jodorowsky. Aye Carumba, seek it out.
The BBC DVD series about ‘The Planets’. Recommendo.
Cinema 16 : European Short Film Compilation DVD - El Secdleto de la tlompeta by Javier Fesser from Spain was a standout, Copyshop by Virgil Widrich, Jabberwocky by Jan Svankmajer & My Wrongs by Chris Morris also get cigars.
Giants & Toys by Yasuzo Masumura (1958), kitschy anti-consumer flick moralising to post WWII Japan. Not as good as I’d hoped.
The Jam & Brass Eye series by Chris Morris. Funny plus plus, with lots of skits on the boundaries of what can be broadcast.
Kwaidan – 1964 Japanese horror / fantasy /ghost stories. Luscious cinematography on extravagantly choreographed sets.
